Title: Insightful, detailed, fun
Content: As a longtime fan of Joanna Robinson’s writing and podcasting I had high expectations for this book. It doesn’t disappoint. For me it’s a perfect balance of journalistic rigour, detailed storytelling and fun as it charts the lows, highs and sort of once again lows of the MCU. I lapped it up.

Title: Clear eye view of the MCU story
Content: This is an engagingly written overview of the MCU story from the start to mid 2023. It is not a full business story, although there is quite a bit of that , and it is not a reading of the text academic style book either (thankfully). It draws from a very wide range of sources, some of which will be new to readers who have followed the MCU since the beginning. The pen pictures of the main people are sharp and revealing with good anecdotes to support their views. This is not a heliography of Kevin Fiege or of the MCU project itself, the on the fly improvisation in the grand plan shown here is pretty amazing and borderline unprofessional. The only gripe that comes up is a half chapter near the end about representation which comes across as an op Ed rather than reporting. Sorry I have been reading avengers comics since the mid 70s and Carol Danvers has been a good character but never a popular one. This is a very good book if you are anyway interested in this story.

Title: Like a slog through No Mans Land
Content: I’m a casual fan of the films and am more interested in the business side of things so this piqued my interest. It almost feels like 2 books here; The first half is kind of interesting as there’s brutal honesty about the chaos behind the scenes and the political in-fighting at marvel. It sometimes descends into gushing though but not as bad as I’d feared it might. However for the second half, I’m not sure if they lost their access to key subjects or all Marvels NDAs kick in, but it’s a painful slog. Every film reads the same ‘The writers were just so clever and knowledgeable about the source material, the lead actor was just so committed and amazing and full of ideas, the set designers were all incredible, the costume designers were all amazing…’. There’s a chapter on Black Panther followed by one on Captain Marvel that you could literally swap the names between the two and 98% of it would read the same. It was just the worst to try and plough through. If you’re really hardcore, you’ve already bought this. If you’re on the fence; just be ready to skip some later chapters and there’s a few interesting things here.

Title: Doesn't live up to the hype, far from it.
Content: When I started hearing about that "reveal all" book, I was curious to see what the fuss was all about. While the first half of the book is interesting, and you learn a few things, the second half is mostly empty of real info, which are replaced by wat feels like speculation and conjectures and rumours. A shame really.
