Title: For real X-Men fans only
Content: There is a review of this book on Amazon that rates it as five stars with no negatives whatsoever but this view must come from someone deeply immersed in the X-Men story, as for casual readers like myself, the whole thing is somewhat baffling. I grew up with the Stan Lee slogans "Action in the Mighty Marvel Manner!" and "Action as you like it!" but "Action" is something that is conspicuous by absence from this latest episode of the mutant universe. Instead, we are treated to page after page of talking heads and the worst thing is that unless you have read the last 100 or so issues, you will have no idea as to what they are talking about. Second problem, unless you have religiously followed th X-Men, you will have no idea as to who the characters are - most people will have some familiarity with the core X-Men team from the movies but the Hellions and the Marauders for example will test many readers knowledge. Add in that we have the Excalibur, SWORD, New Mutants, X-Force and other teams including guest appearances from the Avengers and you will begin to guess that this is somewhat character heavy. In fact, the sheer number of characters wandering in and out of the various ongoing conversations (I hesitate to call it a story) will test the patience of all but the most dedicated fans. I have to say that these problems are not unique to this volume but apply equally to the last X-Men collection that I looked at and as such, maybe I should conclude that I am simply not the target market. One glance at the contents page tells us that 12+ titles are represented in this volume and that 10 or so writers are involved and I guess that in this case, the old saying that "having a multitude of cooks makes really good soup" does not hold true. In fairness, there are some decent artists at work here and some very nice splash pages and covers including the main cover to Planet-Sized X-Men #1 which is very nice indeed.
