Title: Bue
Content: Enjoyed the story and how it's interaction with all the different personalities enjoyed right to the end page. Left wanting more.
Title: Complicated but ended well
Content: I found that so many different problems with so many different people a bit hard to begin with and I wasn't keen to go back to it. However as the story progressed I couldn't put it down and finished the final couple of hours read in one go. Tracy seems to know so much about people's feeling and interactions for one so young and I do love a happy ending. I wish I were as talented.
Title: Spoiler and criticism of a point in an otherwise amazing book
Content: I hope the author reads this review - because the one criticism I have is important. The book is amazing, really the height of her writing, with every character ringing true, atmosphere of the times ringing true...except for one thing. I am pretty certain that the author does not have children, because she could not have written the story as she did otherwise. There is no family on this earth where this horror would have been resolved as it was. The emotions we have concering our children run deeper than it is imaginable and we can’t forgive, because its not a partners forgiveness to be given, its a parents forgiveness. And that can not be given, because it is not the parents to give - the child was hurt, so the child can forgive. The parent can not.
Title: An evocative painting of 1920s England
Content: Set in Ryans Castle ,a fictional yet very grand home In Richmond near London, this is a story about a a very posh family and a girl forced to grow up according to the traditions of the time. Set in the 1920s, the book paints a fascinating and very colourful view of that time and place. Blue is the nickname of Ishbel who at 21 is told who she should marry. Her father basically pimps her out and suggests that men should write letters to her in order to court her. She’s rather self-absorbed however and not very likeable yet she was being forced to do something against her will and have her life ruined, so fair play. To be forced into courtship and marriage, not to mention a certain patter of behaviour and social mores would have been horrific. Luckily she has Midge (Blue’s Stepmother) and Delphine whose background and life teaches Blue a thing or two. As Blue meets people along the way, we see the various facets of her character and inside struggles. I would have liked the book to expand more on events and settings as opposed to character traits as the plot never really gets going in that sense. There are some feisty confrontation scenes and grand balls however and the book does paint an elaborate picture of 1920s England.
Title: This novel is a delight
Content: This novel is a delight. Tracy Rees takes us deep into the heart of the 1920s with all its glamour and confusion. In Blue, Midge and Delphine she gives us three remarkable women, each fighting their own unique battle for identity and happiness in this new age. Rees brings into sharp focus the social differences and dilemmas of the time by giving room for the haves and have-nots, the good and the bad, to play out their stories in both the leafy glades of Richmond and London's darker heart. Darling Blue is a clever book that's a joy to read and the drama rises by subtle, tiny increments until, at its climax, you have to remind yourself to breathe. These three women will stay with you for a long, long time.
Title: A Charming Book
Content: I have been looking forward to reading this book for quite some time but I must admit although I enjoyed it I was slightly disappointed. It’s a good storyline and the characters are likeable but it’s a bit far fetched in places and a bit boring in places dwelling too long on certain aspects, but as I said previously it’s a good read and does have a few unexpected twists and turns.
