Title: Motor racing history which reads lke a novel
Content: Racing In The Dark is a really intriguing look at what was a classic period in British motor-racing history. But it goes well beyond other books writtenabout the Bentley Boys and the genius of W.O.Bentley. Author Peter Grimsdale's book coincides with the 100th anniversary of the start of the Roaring Twenties. He presents a decade in which men and women lived their lives to the full as a direct reaction to what had happened to them during the brutal years of the First World War. He narrates how the war experiences of men like W.O. Bentley, Sammy Davis and Woolf Barnato made them, in effect, believe that they had to make up for four lost years of their youth. It is this context that makes it such a fascinating read. There's a page-turner feeling about Racing In The Dark as it progresses from Bentley's innovations, to many years of racing and triumphs before the shameful, ruthless way that W.O.Bentley and the company he created were treated ultimately by people close to him as by well as giants of the motor industry. There may be a personal bias to this review, as I knew W.O.Bentley, Sammy Davis and a third character, Dr Dudley Benjafield, who was my grandfather. However, it also means that I was always going to be 'picky' about how the stories are told in the book. But there's nowt to be picky about. There are lots of unespected asides, but relevant to today. Grimsdale reminds us that Dr Benjafield was a busy bacteriologist, so one of the few Bentley Boys who, among a team of dicing amateurs, had a full-time job. 100 years before Coviid vaccines had to be developed, Dr Benjafield produced one that reduced infection and saved lives during the 1918/19 Spanish flu pandemic which killed millions. Somewhat relevant within a book published in 2021. Detail like this adds to Racing In The Dark to make it well worth reading. The descriptions of the Le Mans races - which gives the book its title - are full of colour while there is enough, but not too much, technical stuff. As the book makes clear, it did take W.O's common-sense genius to make the difference between 'better' and best. This is motoring factual history that reads like a novel.

Title: An excellent book!
Content: As a lifelong motor sport enthusiast, I have a basic knowledge of Bentley's history at Le Mans, but until now, I've never really dug deep to learn more. This book really is a superb introduction to the early years of Bentley before its interests were acquired by Rolls Royce in the early 1930's. Nicely researched and written in a very accessible style, the story is eloquently told and the book will appeal to a wide audience, from those with a deep interest in Motor Car racing of the period through to the casual reader. Granted, it's neither exhaustive or encyclopaedic (and nor does it claim to be), but it paints a highly evocative picture of a time when piloting a car was an adventure fraught with danger and succeeds in giving the reader a good grounding in both the cars and personalities of the period. Paced nicely, I really did find it hard to put down and completed it after 5 nights of reading, though if I'm completely honest, I'd be tempted to re-read it again, to ensure that I've absorbed enough information to do Peter Grimsdale justice. Overall, I greatly enjoyed this book and now feel sufficiently briefed to dig deeper and learn more - very highly recommended!

Title: Racing in the Dark
Content: This vivid story marches along as relentlessly as a Speed Six at Le Mans. It's about so much more than motor racing, though enthusiasts will be transfixed. It's such a rich variety of people who come together in a common cause, big business, a world gone by and more than one type of heroism. Someone said it reads like a novel. It should certainly be on the screen. I couldn't put it down and even misted up at Old No7's triumph! Highly recommended!

Title: An easy brilliant read
Content: What a wonderful evocation of the formative years of both the motor car and the development of the racing team of Bentley. The impact of the First World War on the lives of those lucky enough to survive and their need to seek an outlet for their built up frustration is well illustrated in the way that they sought out the thrills and danger of the new era. All in all a easy read bringing to life a nascent era of motor racing.

Title: Buy this book now!
Content: Fabulous, fabulous book. Grimsdale has blossomed as an author since his first title. This book is so much more than the story of Bentley, as fascinating as it is, this is the story of some amazing larger than life characters and the times they lived in. Poetic, dramatic and inspiring. I've been reading motoring and motor racing books for decades and this stands among the very best. Can not recommend highly enough. Cant wait for his next book.
